When India ran one of the largest child-nutrition surveys ever conducted — the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey — the shortfalls it found were not exotic. They clustered around a small, ordinary handful of nutrients. These four are the ones actually worth your attention.
It is easy to be overwhelmed by the long vitamin lists printed on children's products. The useful truth is narrower: in Indian children specifically, most of the genuine gaps sit in vitamin D, vitamin B12, iron and iodine. Understanding these four — rather than all thirty on a label — is most of the job.
Vitamin D
The “sunshine” vitamin that sunshine often doesn't fix
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and is part of normal bone development. The paradox in India is that despite abundant sunlight, low vitamin D is widespread in children — because of indoor lifestyles, sun avoidance, skin pigmentation that slows skin synthesis, and air pollution in cities. It is one of the most consistently reported shortfalls in Indian surveys.
Where it comes from
Sunlight on skin, a small number of foods (fatty fish, egg yolk, fortified foods), and supplementation. Diet alone rarely covers it, which is why fortification and supplements matter here.
Vitamin B12
The vegetarian gap
B12 is needed for healthy nerves, normal blood formation, and normal energy metabolism. Its natural dietary sources are almost entirely animal foods — which makes it the single hardest nutrient to get in a vegetarian or vegan household, and low B12 is common in Indian children for exactly that reason.
Iron
The most common deficiency of all
Iron carries oxygen in the blood and supports normal energy and concentration. Iron deficiency — and the anaemia it can lead to — is the most common micronutrient deficiency in Indian children, and one of the most common in the world. Plant-based (non-haem) iron from dals and greens is also absorbed less efficiently than the iron in meat, which compounds the gap in vegetarian diets.
Where it comes from
Meat and eggs (most absorbable); dals, beans, dark leafy greens, and fortified foods (less absorbable — pairing them with vitamin C helps). Note that too much iron is not better than enough; supplementation should follow a doctor's guidance, ideally after a blood test.
Iodine
Quietly important, easily overlooked
Iodine is needed for normal thyroid function, which governs growth and metabolism. India's salt-iodisation programme has made a real difference, but intake still varies — and iodine remains one of the nutrients worth being aware of, particularly where non-iodised or specialty salts are used at home.

Iodised salt (the main source in India), dairy, and seafood.

What to do with this
Two things. First, build the everyday diet with these four in mind — iodised salt, dairy, dals and greens with a little vitamin C, and safe sun. Second, if you are concerned, ask your doctor to check rather than supplementing on a guess: these four can all be measured, and more is not always better (iron and vitamin D in particular have safe upper limits). A daily fortified drink can help cover the gaps on ordinary days, but it works alongside a doctor's advice, not instead of it.
